In memoriam: Colonel and former surgeon Walter Henny (Groningen, 09 June 1945 - Helsinki, 30 June 2023)
A special man and good friend has passed away
The funeral of Colonel and former surgeon Walter Henny took place this afternoon at 2.30 PM in the auditorium of Hofwijck crematorium in Rotterdam. The attendance was large. In addition to family and friends, and prior to the ceremony, hundreds of soldiers from home and abroad formed a guard of honour.
Impressive and what a loss.
FATEFUL
On 30 June, late in the evening, I received the tragic news that my good friend Walter Henny had fallen from a great height during the CIOMR summer conference on the Suomenlinna Fortress Island in Helsinki and had died on the spot.
Walter was Honorary President and within the CIOMR responsible for the military-medical competitions between the teams of the various NATO member states.
COOPERATION
I have worked with Walter for many years and this September he would have joined us in providing training in First Aid in the Wilderness for a group of third-year medical students, in preparation for their internship abroad.
ERASMUS MEDICAL CENTRE ROTTERDAM
In 1998 I met Walter Henny at Erasmus MC, where under his inspiring leadership I gave first aid training to second-year medical students.
Later, when he was retired, I was allowed to take over his duties as a coordinator and trainer.
TEXTBOOK OF ACUTE MEDICINE
During that period, the collaboration between the Erasmus MC Surgery department and the Radboud MC Surgery department resulted in the Textbook of Acute Medicine, to which he made a substantial contribution. The fifth, completely revised edition has recently been published.
MILITARY AND WILDERNESS MEDICINE
We shared our interest in military and wilderness medicine and especially the many similarities between these research areas.
ENGAGED AND DEDICATED
As an enthusiastic and dedicated physician, Walter Henny has inspired and trained countless people in trauma care under complex circumstances.
THANKS
I owe a lot to Walter. He was a true friend with great empathy and completely loyal. My gratitude is great.
Rest in peace 🙏🏻😢❤️🇳🇱
